Monds highlights good day by defense
BY MIKE DeCOURCY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
On a day when the Cincinnati Bearcats defense allowed only one real scoring drive, did not allow UAB to reach the 300-yard mark and forced the Blazers to punt seven times, tackle Mario Monds could not have been more dominant.
His day: three unassisted tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble, one broken up pass. Monds, who is 6-foot-4, 329 pounds, was playing only his fifth Division I game. By surging into the backfield and often forcing hurried throws, he disrupted another half-dozen or so plays.
It's coming around, said Monds, who missed the Bearcats' loss to Ohio State last month because of a knee injury. There are some things that are different the speed of the game, the quality of the players.
I was just getting the pass rush. I'd go inside, outside, we'd run stunts. Everything we have, we pretty much used it out there.
SCOOP ON COOP: If only there were a professional football league that allows you to play against UAB every now and then. This would be Robert Cooper's dream.
His 56-yard touchdown catch was the first receiving score of his career.
In three games against the Blazers, he averaged better than 7 yards a carry and rushed for 450 yards. His 174 yards Saturday gave him 2,097 for his career, making him the eighth Bearcat to reach the 2,000-yard mark. Nearly a quarter of his yards to this point have been gained against UAB.
LEAGUE LIFE: If the decision to expand Conference USA was not enough of a reason for UC to wonder about the benefits of playing in this league, there are others.
The Bearcats are 0-2 in Conference USA for the third time in four seasons of league competition. Their overall record in C-USA games is 5-14. With the loss to UAB, the Bearcats now have a conference defeat against every member of the league.
DOUBLE DUTY: Lewis Johnson, who handled the sideline reporting for Fox Sports Net's telecast of the UC-UAB game, had to take a break from his job at halftime to be honored as part of the UC Athletic Hall of Fame.
Johnson, who was All-American in track and field in 1987, was chosen as part of the 1999 class.
