No. 5 St. Louis edges No. 16 Bearcats 1-0 in C-USA

This year the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team is enjoying unprecedented success. A No. 15 national ranking last week was an all-time high.

However, UC's ascension took a hit Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to Conference USA rival St. Louis University at Meyers Field. The No. 16 Bearcats fell to 6-2-1, 1-1-0 in conference. With the victory, No. 5 St. Louis (8-1-1, 2-0-0) took sole possession of first place in Conference USA.

The lone score of the game came on a close-range Jack Jewsbury shot that was preceded by two sharp passes in front of the Bearcats' net. Brian Hadican tracked down the ball at the left side of Bearcat goalie Jake Witkowski and found Jason Mims at the far side of the net. Mims headed the ball to Jewsbury, who snuck it past Witkowski at 18 minutes into the first half.

“We've been working on forward pass plays in practice all week,” Jewsbury said. “Jason put the ball right there for me.”

“The goal was preventable,” said UC coach Jeff Cook. “I thought our fullback could have won the header. We're not pleased with the result, that's for sure. But I felt we worked hard, especially in the second half. We had territorial advantage in the second half.”

The Bearcats kept the ball at the Billikens' side of the field for the majority of the game but couldn't capitalize. UC outshot St. Louis 7-5. Witkowski made two saves. Billiken goalie Paul Nagy was forced to make five.

“Last week against Kentucky (a 2-1 win last Sunday) we played poorly but we got the results,” UC defenseman Andrew Kean said. “Today we got a good performance but we didn't get the results. Now we've got to get the two together.”

Tempers flared on several occasions. In the first half, be fore a UC free kick, St. Louis forward Dominic DaPra fell to the ground clutching his head amid pushing and shoving. After the game DaPra said Kean elbowed him.

Kean said that if he caught DaPra with an elbow it was unintentional. He also thought DaPra acted dramatically. “He sure made a meal of it, didn't he?” said Kean, a Scot.
