Cooper misses game for funeral
BY MIKE DeCOURCY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Cincinnati Bearcats starting running back Robert Cooper missed Saturday night's game against Troy State to attend the funeral of his aunt.
Cooper returned home to Georgia and missed practice from Wednesday on following his aunt's death. The funeral was Saturday, and UC's coaches left it up to him to choose whether to return for the game.
His replacement in the lineup was freshman P.J. Mays, who led UC's rushers in the Kent game with 98 yards on 15 caries.
Cooper started the Kent game and rushed for 76 yards on 15 carries, a 5.1 average.
The only previous games in which Cooper did not play during his four seasons at UC was the first of his freshman season. He was available but not put in.
UC also was missing wideout Tye Keith because of an ankle injury suffered in the opener. He had one catch for 16 yards.
IN THE HOLE: UC entered the Troy State game with an opportunity to achieve something it had never done under coach Rick Minter: open a season 2-0.
The best previous start for Minter was 1-1 in 1996 and 1997. His other three teams all started 0-2.
But starting strong hasn't been common for any Bearcats coaches. Tim Murphy never did it in five years from 1989 to 1993. The last time UC started 2-0 was in 1986 under Dave Currey with wins against Virginia Tech and Miami. That team finished 5-6.
