Mickeal, Martin make U.S. team

BY MIKE DeCOURCY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Cincinnati Bearcats forwards Pete Mickeal and Kenyon Martin and Ohio State guards Scoonie Penn and Michael Redd make up a third of the roster for the U.S. team that will compete in next month's World University Games. The squad was announced Friday.

THE TEAM
  Erick Barkley, 6-1, St. John's.
  Cory Bradford, 6-2, Illinois.
  Chris Carrawell, 6-6, Duke.
  Kevin Freeman, 6-7, UConn.
  Brendan Haywood, 7-0, North Carolina.
  Mark Madsen, 6-9, Stanford.
  Kenyon Martin, 6-8, UC.
  Pete Mickeal, 6-6, UC.
  Chris Mihm, 7-0, Texas.
  Scoonie Penn, 5-10, Ohio St.
  Michael Redd, 6-6, Ohio St.
  Matt Santangelo, 6-1, Gonzaga.
  Coach: Oliver Purnell, Dayton.
Assistant coaches: Jay Harrington, Belleville Area College; Dan Monson, Gonzaga.
“I guess our team does have quite an Ohio flavor,” said Dayton coach Oliver Purnell, head coach of the U.S team. “We're fortunate we have four guys from Ohio that are certainly four of the top 10 or 12 players in the country.”

Purnell said it was easy to name the first nine players on the 12-man roster but tougher to differentiate between the final three who made it and the four who were cut. Mickeal, Martin, Penn and Redd were among those never in danger of being left out.

“Martin is a guy that can play the power forward or the post and can defend the three (small forward),” Purnell said. “He's tremendously active. Mickeal likes to defend, and he obviously is a slasher and a finisher. That's something we don't have a lot of. And he's a tough guy, and I think you have to be tough mentally and physically to win internationally.” This U.S. team will be challenged to match the result of last year's college national team, led by Miami's Wally Szczerbiak and Xavier's James Posey, which won the Goodwill Games gold medal. The United States has won the past five World Univer sity Games golds.

Martin, a center with the Bearcats, will play mostly power forward for the United States along with Mark Madsen of Stanford.

Mickeal's company at small forward will be Duke's Chris Carrawell and Connecticut's Kevin Freeman.
