3rd bowl game slated for Conference USA
BY SCOTT MACGREGOR
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The University of Cincinnati and other Conference USA football teams will have a third chance to qualify for a postseason bowl.
The league announced Tuesday that its second bowl entrant will go to the new Mobile Alabama Bowl to play the second selection from the Western Athletic Conference.
The C-USA champion still will qualify for the Liberty Bowl, and the league keeps its tie-in with the Humanitarian Bowl, which UC won in 1997.
The Associated Press reported C-USA signed a five-year agreement with the Mobile Bowl, and the WAC signed up for a year.
We're thrilled with this new association and excited about the future of this bowl game, C-USA Commissioner Mike Slive said.
The Mobile Bowl will make its debut Dec.22 on ESPN2 at Mobile's 42,000-seat Ladd-Peebles Stadium, also the site of the all-star Senior Bowl.
It will have a minimum $750,000 payout to each team.
C-USA sent three teams to bowls last season: Tulane (Liberty), Southern Miss (Humanitarian) and Louisville (Motor City). UC and Houston also have appeared in bowl games since C-USA's inception four years ago.
