UC defense shuts down offense in scrimmage
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Bearcat defense dominated Cincinnati's intrasquad scrimmage Saturday at Nippert Stadium.
UC's defenders recovered three fumbles and prevented the offensive units from gaining first downs on 14 of the 23 series.
The offense managed three touchdowns on runs of 15 and 12 yards by DeMarco McCleskey and P.J. Mays and Deontey Kenner's 20-yard pass to Tony Smikle. Kenner completed 13 of 28 passes for 144 yards, Former Beechwood High star Greg Hergott was 9-of-15 for 79 yards.
McCleskey led all rushers with 48 yards in eight carries. Mays, a redshirt freshman from Youngstown, was the offensive workhorse, rushing nine times for 29 yards and catching four passes for 50 yards.
There is no question that this was a defensive-dominated scrimmage, UC coach Rick Minter said. Our defensive unit is in transition. We are very young on that side of the ball, so I am very pleased with their success today.
The spring game is 2 p.m. Saturday.
