Loyer named coach at Illinois junior college
BY MIKE DeCOURCY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
John Loyer is a coach again.
After nearly two years away from the gym, Loyer has been selected to become the head coach at Wabash Valley Community College in Illinois, an appointment that will become official if he's approved by the Illinois Eastern Community College board April 20.
Loyer, who worked as an assistant coach at the University of Cincinnati for nine years, lost his job in November after spending 20 months on administrative leave during the UC and NCAA investigations into the establishment of guard Charles Williams' eligibility.
Before that episode, however, Loyer was a key strategist for Bearcats coach Bob Huggins. The last two teams he worked with were a combined 54-13. Loyer impressed the Wabash administration in interviews and was recommended by Huggins and former UC Athletic Director Rick Taylor, now AD at Northwestern.
We thought because he had been associated with a top-quality Division I school and program, and he had a lot of experience in recruiting high-quality players those were the main factors that caught our attention, said Wabash Valley President Harry Benson. We believe he's a good person, a good coach, a high-quality coach.
Wabash Valley went 19-13 last season, two years after reaching the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament and finishing 30-6. Rick Hughes, who coached the team this past season, left for a job at Lee University in Tennessee, an NAIA school.
We have a high opinion of John Loyer, Benson said. We believe he knows what he's doing, can keep the program at a high level. We're just delighted to have him as part of our staff.
