Huggins reprimanded by C-USA

The Cincinnati Enquirer

UC basketball coach Bob Huggins was reprimanded Friday by the Conference USA office for comments he made to the crowd at the Shoemaker Center during the Bearcats' 82-69 victory Wednesday over UNC Charlotte.

Huggins declined to comment about the punishment out of concern any statement might be subject to additional action by the league.

With 12:33 left in the first half of Wednesday's game, UNCC guard Diego Guevara left the floor because of a cut on his elbow. As he passed the midcourt line, he was struck in the head by a quarter thrown from somewhere in the stands.

Informed of what happened, Huggins took the public address microphone and said, “Folks, in spite of the fact there's people that have no class in this league, we have class here. If you see somebody in front of you throwing something on the floor, get 'em, we're throwing 'em out.”

“Coach Huggins' effort to control the crowd is appreciated,” C-USA commissioner Mike Slive said in a statement, “but his derogatory comments about other conference institutions are a violation of the conference's code of conduct.”

If Huggins were to commit “future violations of a similar nature,” he could face additional punishment.

Huggins frequently has complained about the treatment UC receives on the road from spectators in league arenas.

Slive said it is a violation of the league's code of conduct “to issue public criticism of member institutions of the league.”

Huggins could argue he did not publicly criticize any members of the league, since he did not name names.

When that question was raised, Slive said he had no further comment.
