Williams to transfer to Fresno St.

BY MIKE DeCOURCY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Point guard Charles Williams, the focus of the seven-month investigation into the University of Cincinnati basketball program, said Tuesday he intends to transfer to Fresno State for his senior season.

Williams, who started most of last season for the Bearcats, told the Fresno Bee he will enroll in classes Monday and accept a scholarship from coach Jerry Tarkanian, the father of George Tarkanian, who was Williams' coach at Chaffey (Calif.) Junior College.

In 28 games for the Bearcats after transferring from Chaffey, Williams averaged 3.0 points and compiled 84 assists and 40 steals. He was removed from the team Feb. 26 after the investigation turned up evidence he accepted a plane ticket and restaurant meal from a university professor, possibly in violation of NCAA rules. He missed the final six games.

Fresno State has applied to the NCAA for a waiver that would grant Williams a waiver of the mandatory residence requirement for transfer athletes. That is expected to be granted, and Williams will be eligible to play immediately.

The possibility of the waiver was presented to Williams as a means of facilitating his cooperation by investigators looking into the UC program. Because he used a redshirt year while in junior college, Williams needs the waiver in order to continue his career in Division I basketball.

Williams said Fresno appealed to him because he wanted to play in California, on a quality team that had an opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament.

"It's one of my goals," Williams said, "and that was taken away. "

Williams said his Cincinnati experience was less than satisfying.

"The only thing I regret is not being able to show my entire game. I didn't enjoy the game last year. The entire year was no fun, and when it isn't fun, then it's no use playing any more."
