Baker replaces Harrison
Former head coach at Cal-Irvine

TEANECK,N.J. - Rod Baker's first full day with the Cincinnati Bearcats was spent on the road. He has been a basketball coach long enough to expect as much.

Baker, 44, formerly head coach at Cal-Irvine, has agreed to accept a job as an assistant on coach Bob Huggins' staff. He replaces Larry Harrison, who left after eight seasons on Huggins' staff to work for new DePaul coach Pat Kennedy.

Baker was in Indianapolis on Tuesday, scouting players at the Nike All-American Camp. He handled this first assignment even though he technically will not become a university employee until a month-long waiting period has passed, Huggins said. Baker will serve under a "personal contract" until he can officially be hired.

Huggins and Baker were assistant coaches together with the U.S. team at the World University Games. Huggins grew to respect Baker's abilities as a coach and communicator.

"I think he's fantastic," Huggins said. "He's got a great way with people, did a great job with the players. They like him, but they've got great respect for him."

Baker was let go following his sixth season at UC-Irvine, when the Anteaters went 1-25. He had a record of 52-116, improving the program's win total each year until the last. In 1995-96, the Anteaters went 15-12 and finished second in the Big West, and Baker was named conference coach of the year.

Baker turned down an opportunity to work in the Golden State Warriors organization, where his former boss, P.J. Carlesimo, recently became head coach.

Huggins is excited about having an assistant with extensive ties on both coasts, where UC has not had great success with high school recruits.

"The Midwest thing, we can handle," Huggins said. "We've had some success in California with junior college guys, but it would be nice to make some connections in the high schools, too."
