Williams case drags on
More interviews are planned

The attorneys in charge of the athletic department investigation into the eligibility of University of Cincinnati basketball player Charles Williams will conduct more interviews on the matter, perhaps beginning this week.

Sources close to the investigation said Tuesday that attorneys from the firm of the Kansas-based firm of Bond, Schoeneck & King will re-interview several people who originally spoke with them about circumstances surrounding Williams' enrollment at UC.

This development comes more than a month after attorney Mike Glazier said he was working on completing a report for submission to UC President Joseph Steger. That report was submitted as a rough draft in mid-June, but UC faculty representative Nancy Hamant said it was sent back for revisions.

The delay in the resolution of the case has caused problems for Williams, who started most of the 1996-97 season at point guard for the Bearcats. He still does not know where - or whether - he will play his final season.

His attorney, Anne Frayne of Dayton, said Williams has been released to pursue a transfer. However, because Williams already used a redshirt season when he was injured in junior college, he would not be able to play again in Division I without a waiver that would permit him to transfer without sitting out the 1997-98 season.

That arrangement was presented to Williams in the course of the investigation.

The inquiry began Jan. 28, when UC became one of several schools to receive a letter from the NCAA asking that all athletes who attended Compton (Calif.) College have their eligibility re-examined.

Williams took one three-credit course at Compton last summer toward his associates' degree from Chaffey (Calif.) College. In the course of checking on that, investigators developed questions about how Williams paid for summer courses he took at UC and about money he received from a UC professor for a plane ticket to Los Angeles so Williams could spend the Christmas holiday with his family.
