UC to open in NIT
Bearcats will host Detroit Nov. 19 or 20

BY MIKE DeCOURCY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Cincinnati Bearcats will open their 1997-98 basketball season against Detroit-Mercy in the Chase NIT, with the first-round tournament game to be played at Shoemaker Center.

The exact date of the game and the remainder of the 16-team bracket will not be revealed until a press conference Tuesday, but a source close to the event said the Bearcats and Titans will be one of eight first-round games at campus sites Nov. 19-20.

A member of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, Detroit finished last season 16-13 but is expected to return six of its top eight scorers, including 6-5 shooting guard Derrick Hayes, who averaged 15.9 points and made 38 three-pointers.

The Titans are coached by Perry Watson, who has a 63-52 record in four years. He is best known as the Michigan assistant coach who helped gather the recruiting class that became known as the "Fab Five" and knocked UC out of the Final Four in 1992.

Whether UC will get to play its second game at the Shoe has not yet been determined. In UC's only other appearance in this event, in 1993-94, the Bearcats won at home against Butler and then were sent on the road to play at North Carolina, the defending national champion. UC lost that game by a 90-63 final.
