Ex-BC guard may consider UC

BY MIKE DeCOURCY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Star Boston College guard Scoonie Penn, the MVP of this season's Big East Conference tournament, has asked to be released from his basketball scholarship and may consider transferring to the University of Cincinnati.

The Boston Herald reported in today's editions that UC is one of the schools Penn may examine. UC coach Bob Huggins said Monday Penn had not contacted him.

Penn also may be interested in Ohio State, which now employs former Eagles coach Jim O'Brien, who recruited Penn to Boston College. O'Brien told the Herald he would listen if Penn were to contact him. Another school that has been mentioned as a possibility is Florida State.

Penn asked for his release more than six weeks after O'Brien was hired away from BC by the Buckeyes. New Eagles coach Al Skinner consented.

Penn stands 5-foot-10 and can fill either backcourt position. Penn averaged better than 13 points in each of his first two seasons.

The Bearcats will likely be in the market for a scoring guard for the 1998-99 season, with D'Juan Baker entering his senior year this fall. UC has two scholarships available and could afford to use one on Penn, who will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out next season at his new school.
