UC says reports wrong,
assistant never suspended

BY MIKE DeCOURCY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The University of Cincinnati denied media reports Tuesday that Bearcats assistant basketball coach John Loyer had been suspended from his duties.

Tom Hathaway, UC's sports information director, said he was told by school authorities Loyer was not currently suspended and had not been suspended in the past. Reached late Tuesday, Loyer declined comment.

Channel 12 led its newscast Monday with an assertion by Anne Frayne, attorney for UC basketball player Charles Williams, that Loyer was suspended from his job. Radio station WLW-AM (700) also quoted Frayne on the matter, and announcers for The Score (WKYN-AM 1160) said Loyer's suspension had continued for three weeks.

Frayne reiterated Tuesday that she had been told by Rick Evrard, one of the attorneys conducting UC's investigation of Williams' eligibility, that Loyer was suspended April 3 but later was reinstated. She said she was not told the reason for the action.

Loyer, 32, has been an assistant at UC since the 1989-90 season and has been one of the Bearcats' two full-time coaches since 1994-95.
