Could 1,000 sportswriters and broadcasters be wrong? Perhaps, in the case of Cincinnati Bearcats forward Danny Fortson.
Having been selected first-team All-America by the Associated Press, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, Basketball Times and Basketball Weekly - which is pretty much the full list of All-America teams one can make - Fortson had every reason to believe he would be attending the John R. Wooden Award dinner this Friday at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
Fortson wasn't invited.
Instead, the top five vote-getters for the honor, chosen by a national panel of journalists similar to that which selects football's Heisman Trophy, are Tim Duncan of Wake Forest, Keith Van Horn of Utah, Raef LaFrentz and Jacque Vaughn of Kansas and Ron Mercer of Kentucky.
Vaughn is the most surprising choice. He played only two-thirds of the season for Kansas and was the Jayhawks' fifth-leadng scorer, averaging 10.2 points and shooting 43 percent from the field.
